wine: north to northwest

 

Between them, these five regions; Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna produce about 20 percent of Italy's total wine but account for more than a quarter of the DOC. Piedmont's host of worthy natives includes Barbera, Dolcetto, Cortese, Arneis, Brachetto, the Canelli clone of Moscato and the noblest of them all in Nebbiolo (the source of Barolo, Barbaresco and Gattinara) among others. Emilia-Romagna had been a leading exporter of wines with shipments to America of sweet and bubbly Lambrusco, whose vines spill over the fertile plains of Emilia. The Alba area is renowned for its smooth, supple Dolcetto under several appellations, and for first-rate Nebbiolo and white Arneis from the Roero hills. Among whites, Gavi shows a crisp yet elegant style that explains why also gain ground in Roero, where the light, zesty Favorita is also emerging.
